Am I The Fool?
Jesus is teaching a crowd when a guy interrupts and asks him to intervene in a dispute the guy has with his brother over his inheritance. Instead, Jesus tells a story. In that story, a wealthy landowner experiences a bumper crop. His response? I'll build myself some bigger barns and then I can kick back in the recliner, crack open a cold one, and enjoy life. But his life would be required of him that night. Then what of all the stuff he acquired?
Following our Doctrine (Know Jesus), Devotion (Reflect Jesus) and Deeds (Serve Jesus) we learned:
- Doctrine: The vanity of thinking you did it all on your own and the ultimate futility that inevitably results from that.
- Devotion: To Reflect Jesus we need to recognize how big of fools we can be and ask God to reorient our heart desires so we are not longing for stuff, but rather that we long for the eternal lasting things of God.
- Deeds: Two practical ways we can Serve Jesus in response to this parable - practicing gratitude and giving generously.
